Gig Racing

As proud owners of a Cornish Pilot Gig, MRSC are members of the Cornish Pilot Gig Rowing Association. This allows us to enter the CPGA- organised racing that is organised throughout the season up and down the country.

Cornish Pilot Gig racing is a true team sport where crews work together, pitting their skills and strength against other boats and the elements.

There are six rowers and a coxswain in each crew and their success relies upon the skill of the coxswain plus the ability of the rowers to pull together under pressure, a combination of oarsmanship and fitness.

Traditional race formats include kite and triangle courses where the start and finish is in view of spectators on the shore. Straight courses have always been popular on the Isles of Scilly where crews can race from island to island.

Cornish Pilot Gig racing is a colourful spectacle and there are over 25 regattas each year. Races are generally held by clubs as part of regattas or community events. Cornish Pilot Gig Association racing rules are the recognised rules for competition.
