Rowans Pursuit Race - 2nd September 2007

MENGEHAM Rythe Sailing Club had a record number of entries for the annual Rowans Pursuit Race held on 2nd September which raised £670 for the local hospice.  The entrants, including 4 boats from Hayling Island Sailing Club, made donations to enter the race and there was a tombola, raffle and afternoon tea. MRSC is committed to supporting local charities and this is the seventh year that this race has been held in aid of the Rowans Hospice.

A club start line provided entertainment for spectators who watched the 38 boats begin the two hour race according to their handicap with the slowest class, Scows, setting off at 2pm and the fastest boat, an RS K6 from HISC, staring 51 minutes later. The specially laid course in Chichester Harbour, with a westerly force 4/5 shifting and gusting wind, provided a long beat across the tide and a challenge to the smaller boats and unfortunately the strengthening wind and choppy conditions forced a number of retirements.

The Travellers’ Trophy was won by James Grant & Greg Wells (HISC) in a Flying Fifteen, Neil Robinson won the MRSC Fast Handicap Trophy in a Finn and Roger Houston won the MRSC Slow Handicap Trophy in a Solo.  [full results]
