Contenders rule the roost in the Frostbite series.
Posted 27.10.10

The Contender fleet made their mark by dominating the frostbite series, except in the light winds of the final race, and putting the Finns firmly down the pecking order, Peter Barr winning from Dan Taylor  on a tie break, with Paul Lincoln in third spot. Simon Notley took the slow handicap honours in his Solo.

Rod & Sarah Till awarded the Commodore's Pot
Posted 14.12.10

Rod & Sarah Till were awarded the Commodore's Pot at the AGM in November in recognition of their work in organising the summer ball. Rod had to rush away during the meeting as he is a shore helper at the RNLI station and there was a shout so a photo opportunity was lost. At last they became less camera shy!

Report from the Parke family

Posted 31.08.10

Anthony Parke went to the Laser Nationals in Cornwall last week. There were 215 competitors over the three fleets; the largest fleet was the Radials with 124 and the 4.7's had 39 entries. The wind varied considerably from none to 25 knots. After 3 races Anthony was lying 1st. After the second day he had swapped positions with Rob Dyer to lie 2nd with 1 point in it. Wednesday and Thursday were disappointing with no

racing being completed. On Friday after one race Anthony would have needed two firsts to guarantee beating Rob. Unable to pull a first out of the bag he then just needed Megan O'Brian to be out of the top 4 to succure 2nd place. Having seen that Megan was well behind the leaders he felt it reasonably safe to swim after his compass that had been ripped out of his boat by another boats main sheet. The fact that he had paid £115 of his own hard earned money for the compass might have influenced his decision! He won a cup for winning the days racing on Monday and finished 2nd overall. Despite registering his club as MRSC and spelling it for them the laser Association do seem to struggle with this and have put him down as coming from Hayling Island( not the sailing club, just the place).

Lifeboat Trophy Race
Posted 25.08.10

Five boats took part in the lifeboat Trophy Race on Saturday 21st August in damp and blustery conditions. The race was more a measure of seamanship as the event involved not just sailing around marks but anchoring, rowing/paddling, raising sails at speed, collecting a stowaway from the pontoon  and a man overboard drill. The race was won by Graeme Macdonald and Angie Tingey in Halloween, with Paddy

Lamperd & Chris Reed second in a Drascombe.  Gil & Carol Carter in Xebeque was joint third with Roger Kent & Alison Read in Bluebell and fifth was Eddie Ault & David Jones in Florence. Click here to see more pictures.

Posted 21.08.10

Jubilee Regatta - 15 August 2010
Posted 19.08.10

The club’s 60th Anniversary Open Regatta held on Sunday 15th August had 73 entries which included 35 boats from Hayling Island Sailing Club. The main fleet had a special course in the harbour with a blustery north, north easterly giving a beat with the tide but made tricky with some big shifts from the opposite direction to the best tidal route. The wind increased throughout the race resulting in several

casualties with only 48 of the 68 entrants finishing. There was a separate race for juniors in the more sheltered area east of the sailing club in which all the 5 Tera entries finished. Results

About 50 bream, 40 mackerel and 12 smoothounds were caught. The smoothounds and small bream were returned to the sea. The highlight of the day was some of the mackerel cooked by the skipper.

Junior Quiz Night
Posted 8.05.10

More than 40 family and junior members made up the nine quiz teams who took part in the Family Quiz and Social evening on 8 May 2010.  Everyone enjoyed the four rounds of the quiz answering questions about films and music with a nautical theme, as well as a technical round which included recognising knots (do you know the difference between bowline and  a reef knot?!)  The winning team  was the ‘Salty Sea Dogs’ (Junior members of the team are pictured) and they managed to achieve a very credible 45.5 correct answers out of 50 questions.  The family team walked away with a bottle of bubbly (for the parents!) and a box of chocolates (for the Juniors).

Miles of Salt Water by Eddie Ault
Posted 05.02.10

In November 2009 the MRSC Cruiser committee awarded me the Log Trophy, for the most miles sailed in the year. Engraved on it are my name, ‘2009’, and ‘5018’.  I am inordinately and indecently proud of this, and liable to go on and on about it. So when people say to me “oh, that’s a lot of miles, was it somewhere nice, then?” I have to try VERY HARD to sound humble and nonchalant. But here goes…more
