Brothers,
James and Tom Price, joined Graeme Macdonald as Mengeham
Rythe Sailing Club’s Season’s Champions at the club’s
annual Prize Giving & Supper for dingy and cruiser races
held on Saturday 25th November. This was
Graeme’s second year as Fast handicap Champion and James’
second year as the Slow Handicap Champion. James was also
awarded the John Woods Trophy for the most races sailed
throughout the season. |

This year
the Prize Giving included the presentation of 50 RYA Sailing
Certificates and MRSC mugs to junior sailors who have been
attending regular sail training sessions at the club. The
training was run by club members who are all qualified RYA
instructors. |

The age
range of the competitors receiving prizes ranged from 6 to 81.
Octagenarian, Don Smith, who regularly takes part in club races,
received the “Curry Pot” for first place in one of the summer
mixed handicap races, sailing his Wayfarer with crew member
Angel Tingey. In contrast, Myles Carter, aged 6, received the
“Junior ¼ Pint” for the youngest competitor. |

Graeme
Macdonald, Sailing Secretary said, “There has been a greater
spread of winners this year, especially in the Finn Class, which
is very healthy for club racing.” To qualify for Season Champion
competitors are required to sail at least 60% of the 34 races
throughout the season. The results for the Fast Handicap
Champion were very close between Graeme Macdonald and Neil
Robinson in 2nd place, both sailing Finns, with the Notley
brothers, Adam and Simon, in 3rd place, challenging
the Finn supremacy in their RS 400. James Price was a clear
Champion in the Slow Handicap fleet with his brother Tom 2nd
and Imogen Barnett 3rd, all sailing in Laser Radials.
But in the results for the Junior Champion, there were only 3.9
points between Tom Price in first place and Imogen Barnett in
second place with Robbie Collinson in 3rd place.

At the
end of the Prize Giving for club races, the “Sailing
Secretary Trophy”, which is one of the most notable
prizes, was presented to junior sailor, Imogen Barnett.
This was awarded in recognition of her commitment to and
improvement in racing her Laser Radial, but especially to
her achievement in sailing for the Plunkett Cup (for slow
handicap boats) in winds of force 6/7 when no other slow
handicap boats went out. She competed successfully with
the fast handicap fleet but could not be awarded the
Plunkett Cup because there were not the necessary three
entrants. |
