Cruiser Invitation to Dinghy Sailors 19th
August 2006
Report by Bob Jenkins, Cruiser
Secretary
On a day that
did not promise much in the way of weather and was going
to limit the event to boats with lids on, about twenty
dinghy sailors turned up and were all accommodated on the
six sailing cruisers that departed on the morning tide.
Against a
fresh headwind, the assembled fleet made their way to
Seagrove Bay on the Isle of White and anchored close to
shore to maximise shelter.
Bursts of
heavy rain meant the beach did not beckon, although three
intrepid souls, led by skipper Nigel Davidson, were seen
landing complete with fresh caught mackerel and the
wherewithal to cook it. For most it was cook on board and
enjoy a comfortable refuge.
In
spite of conditions a convivial atmosphere quickly
developed. Singing broke out on one boat and
transmitted easily across the water. Good food was
in abundance and everyone was well fortified for the
trip home. Inflatable dinghies plied back and forth,
the occupants wishing to see how the others were
getting on and to step aboard.
Time
passed quickly and suddenly it was time to sail for
home. The following wind gave a comfortable and
speedy trip and all boats arrived back at Mengeham
well ahead of evening high tide.
Thanks
to our dinghy friends that attended and to the
cruiser crews that hosted. In spite of the weather,
everyone had a good time.
